As if you needed any more proof on how laid back and “mellow” Vancouverites are, but today saw something like 7,000 of Vancouver’s “mellowest” take to the lawns of the Art Gallery on Georgia Street to participate in what is perhaps one of the quirkiest annual events on the Vancouver calendar – 4:20.
As the legend goes, “in 1971, a group of teenagers at San Rafael High School in San Rafael, California, calling themselves “The Waldos”, used to meet every day after school at 4:20 p.m. to smoke marijuana at the Louis Pasteur statue.” Since then, proponents of that whacky weed “marijuana” have gathered centrally in cities right across North America on the 4th April (4/20) at 4:20pm to ceremoniously light up a joint or 5,000 and celebrate all things cannabis culture.
So if you were wondering what that funny smelling cloud was that was traveling through the streets of the downtown area this afternoon – now you know!
