Spielberg, Jackson join forces for “Tintin” – that’s the headline I just read in an article on the BrisbaneTimes website and then I followed up with a giddy run around the office Yahooing like a madman.
Blistering barnacles – how excited am I about this! I always knew that Spielberg had been chasing down the film rights to the Belgian comic-strip hero Tintin, but I had no idea what his plans were from there.
Apparently the pair plan to complete a three-film series with each directing one each and producing all three together. One would like to think that this is going to be a fool proof equation – amazing character/franchise, two of the best director/producers of our modern time and no doubt a fair smack of studio money being thrown behind the project (reportedly something like $100M).
My first question, of course, was how do they plan on bringing Tintin, Snowy, Captain Haddock and the rest of the crew to the big screen? 2D? 3D? Mixed format? As quoted in the article I just read:
Spielberg said the computer animation technology used for the films would be unlike anything ever seen.
“Herge’s characters have been reborn as living beings, expressing emotion and a soul which goes far beyond anything we’ve seen to date with computer animated characters,” Spielberg said.
“We want Tintin’s adventures to have the reality of a live-action film, and yet Peter and I felt that shooting them in a traditional live-action format would simply not honour the distinctive look of the characters and world that Herge created.”
Jackson said although the movies would be computer generated, the characters would not look cartoonish.
“Instead we’re making them look photorealistic,” Jackson said.
“The fibers of their clothing, the pores of their skin and each individual hair. They look exactly like real people — but real Herge people.”
It’s reported that Spielberg and Jackson have already selected the three books on which they are going to base the three films. Are there any fans out there who would care to put forward their suggestions as to what the three might be?
Damn I’m excited about this! Be prepared for some serious “Tintin-mania” coming up in the foreseeable future!
