U2 kicked off the last performance of their wildly successful “360 Tour” for 2009 last night at Vancouver’s BC Place in front of roughly 55,000 (that’s 54,996 plus Chris, Andrea, Cass and I) receptive fans.
If I learned one thing from the 2-hour set last night which featured Bono, Larry, Adam and The Edge delivering over two dozen of their greatest hits from their back catalogue and current album “No Line on the Horizon”, it’s that Bono without question has the best job in the world.
The boys created their own special brand of musical and lyrical magic while encompassed by “the Claw” – the most amazing 360 degree, four-legged, steel stage setup you’ll ever lay your eyes on. I could go on and on about the sheer scale of the stage setup and all of the statistics that go along with it, but Wikipedia does a far better job of it in their “U2 360 Tour” article. You can also get a good idea of the layout in BC Place from this short gallery of images from Flickr user “Pete Harris“.

While the lengthy and entertaining set-list (see below) had a little something to appease all those in the vocal crowd, the highlight of the night for me was easily the first encore set that consisted of two of U2′s all-time greatest hits – “One” and “Where the Streets Have No Name“. With arms raised and waving, I’m pretty sure the crowd around me on all sides agreed.

The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, due in no small part to the energetic full supporting set by “The Black Eyed Peas“. By the time they had wrapped up their spell on stage concluding with their monster current hit “I Gotta Feeling“, the appreciative crowd was buzzing and more than ready to receive the main event.
It’s not everyday you get to see arguably the world’s greatest rock band (of certainly my generation) perform with such skill and artistry LIVE. I did last night, and it resulted in a 2 hour period of my life that I’ll never forget.
