What do you get when you put a guitar in the hands of a Southern Cal surf-nut? You get the silky smooth, laid back, folky-style musical gems that Donavon Frankenreiter has become synonymous with, that’s what!
Tonight it was Vancouver’s turn to hear a performance of songs from Donavon’s current album “Glow” as well as enjoy a whole swag of favourites from his back catalogue, from the comforts of Granville Street’s Venue Nightclub.
The set was wicked. Period. I’m not savvy enough to have a full set-list for you, but I’m talking tracks like “On My Mind”, “Call Me Papa” (check the video below), “Move By Yourself”, “So Far Away”, “The Way It Is”, “That’s Too Bad” crowd favourite “It Don’t Matter”, and rounding things off with a brilliant cover of “The Weight”.
In true style befitting his reputation, Donavon took time out on a number of occasions to interact with the crowd, give away cans of beer to those fans celebrating a birthday, and even give away the prized hat off of his own head to one lucky fan, who correctly guessed the song title and artist of a cover number that was played. Good times all around!
To top off an already great night, Donavon continued with his extraordinary display of generosity by gifting all ticket holders in the club with a copy of his current album “Glow”. I have to admit, it’s one I hadn’t gotten around to purchasing on iTunes yet, so that was a fantastic bonus! 11 great new tracks, some of which I heard for the first time tonight are now currently streaming their way onto my iPhone ready for a thorough listening tomorrow!
So cool! Thank you Donavon for a very entertaining night!
