SCENARIO: You’re throwing a house party for which you have a wicked & extensive playlist of music set up on your Grooveshark account. As Grooveshark will be running on your personal computer, you really don’t want any guests tinkering with the playlist (skipping tracks etc) and therefore having potential access to your other files and documents. As such, you lock up the room containing your computer meaning you’re going to have to go through the hassle of unlocking the room and accessing your computer each time you want to move between songs yourself. Right?
I came across this nifty solution recently that will allow you to remotely move back and forward through your Grooveshark playlists remotely using your iPhone/iTouch and a simple browser plugin called “Groovebud”. The Groovebud extension is still in “Alpha” development stage so there’s every chance that not everything will work for you perfectly every time… yet. But give it a go – it worked for me both times I tested it for this post.
There’s a few simple ingredients needed, so let’s take a quick look at those.
Here’s what you need:
- Google Chrome Browser
- A Grooveshark account
- The Groovebud browser extension available for free from the Google Chrome App Store
- An iPhone/iTouch
- An iPhone/iTouch QR code reading app such as the free “RedLaser”.
Visit the Google Chrome App Store and install the Groovebud browser extension with a couple of easy clicks.
Open your Grooveshark account in the Google Chrome browser and load up a playlist or radio station that you wish to listen to. Something like the Triple J Hottest 100 is perfect.
Click on the Groovebud icon in your Chrome address bar to generate a QR code for your music.
Using a free scanning app like “RedLaser” for your iPhone/iTouch, scan the QR code and open the captured URL in your mobile browser.
You’ll immediately notice the track name and album art of the first song in your Grooveshark playlist will appear in your browser along with three control buttons – back, play/pause and forward.
All that’s left to do now is start playing your music and enjoy remote control of your playlist. Awesome!
