Canon Australia Photography Competition Follow-Up

Lone Surfer

In a follow up to the "Canon Australia Photography Competition" that I touched on briefly back in October, I caught a glimpse of the two overall winners for the year last night. As expected, I feel the "Judge's Pick" is a more than worthy recipient of the amazing first prize while I can't help but be a little bewildered at the "People's Choice" recipient.

With his image titled "Lone Surfer", New South Welshman "Brad" has captured a fantastic image which clearly depicts the awesome power of mother nature, in this case on Hawaii's North Shore, in an image that combines great light with a perfect moment in time. Well done Brad.

For his trouble, Brad picks up a dream trip for two to anywhere he wants to go worth $25,000 and also an exclusive photography workshop with pro sports photographer Tim Clayton.

The Rose

"Kate" from Victoria, on the other hand, I have to congratulate more so for the outstanding marketing effort she must have had to undertake in order to amass the amount of votes needed to take out the "People's Choice" prize. Don't get me wrong, her colourful image of a dew littered rose set to a blue sky backdrop is dramatic in its presentation, but in my opinion there were far more deserving entries that emerged this year throughout the duration of the competition.

Some of the following images, I think, were far more deserving of the latter accolade and I congratulate their respective snappers for their efforts. In no particular order, here's some of the shots that caught my eye:

Masey, I completely agree about the people's choice winner. I thought this shot was uncreative, uninspiring and certainly had no wow factor...

I don't know that I'd go that far... it's still a nice colourful shot. The point I was trying to make was that there are a number that are far better. I mean that "Blue Boathouse" shot I posted is simply stunning and will no doubt go on to win any number of other competitions that aren't "popular voted".

Its techically and posed well shot, I agree. I was on that site yesterday and was disappointed in that category winner. Completely agree with you about there being many other more worthy photos.

    Hi, Masey

I read your comments with interest! I have to say, I totally agree with you! I was very disappointed with the way the whole competition was run. If they do another comp, and run it the same, or similar way, I would not enter one photo. I have spoken to other photography colleagues who feel the same way. I am happy that I got two of my shots in to the top 10. My Waiting & Watching image has won prizes on many sites throughout the world. Have a look, here: http://www.wolfdesign.nl/displayimage.php?album=128&pos=0 I accept the peoples' decision, however, naturally, I feel it should have won the weekly prize. I'm biased, but that's the way I feel. Thanks for offering your opinion, I'm delighted you liked my shot.

    Cheers

    Phil
