The day I sold my soul to Apple...

In the never ending quest to rid my life of any remnants of Microsoft products and services, I took the plunge today, in a rather dramatic way (well financially speaking anyway) and effectively sold my soul to that computer company with the little piece of fruit as their logo.
Yes, for a sizable amount of hard earned loonies and toonies I now have on order a 32GB iPod iTouch, and brand spanking new MacBook Pro. Most people know I've been talking about the switch to Apple hardware for a long, long time now, so I'm stoked to finally have made the move.
I guess the next step is to now call on all those out there who already own Macs to find out what the "must-have" applications are, and why I need them. I obviously have a preference for free, open source programs, but will throw a little coin on the counter if that's what's required.
So drop me a comment below and let me know what I should look at for the following:
- Virus Protection (if it's even required for Macs these days)
- Calendar
- Backing up of DVDs
- Application Launcher
Oh yeah, and before I forget, I'm also on the lookout for a good masculine name for my new silver MacBook Pro companion. My good friend and fellow MacBook'er Amber has suggested "Triton" which is a good one, but I'm open to other suggestions before I settle on anything.
Cheers and happy Mac'ing!

Brett will do.
Speaking as an expert on the naming of inanimate objects... when you get your shiny new MacBook home, take him out, set him up, and let him tell you what his name is - if indeed he is a he. You never know - you may end up with a transgender puter that needs a little extra care & consideration. Just let 'it' tell YOU what it's name is. You can't go wrong.
P.S. Roger say hi!
Dad says 'Jonathan' is a good name for an Apple.....better than 'Granny Smith'. XXXX
1. Virus Protection (if it's even required for Macs these days) - not necessary, as there aren't any affecting OSX
2. Email - umm, Mail.app on OSX?
3. Calendar - iCal on OSX?
4. Backing up of DVDs - just use Disk Utility on OSX, or purchase/acquire Toast for 'backing up' encrypted disks
5. Application Launcher - the Finder? or use the shortcut to Spotlight and open via that.
Have a read through this.
Failing that, I'll give you a few in-person lessons in a few weeks, demonstrating on my own MBP.
Call it 'Roberto'
@Brett - I think you missed that line about needing a "masculine" name. Sorry, it's probably my fault for not making that clearer...
the #1 application for your new lappy should be: Quicksilver
Bar none, it's the most effective addon that I've downloaded. Launch programs with as little as three key-strokes? automate dozens of functions and lots of other things I keep learning about almost daily. In a hyphenated word: bad-ass.

Enjoy your new gear.
Spargo, you were a little slow off the mark - thought you would have had the first entry!
only kidding, cant wait to see Masey in person (god, when was the last time???) and your new house Spargo...of course seeing you and Carly is up there too Ço)
x Karen
Mr Bentley, Mr Louis Bentley.
Better yet, name it 'Looooouuuuuuuuuu'
Welcome to the dark side, mate. The grass really is greener over here. I can hook you up with all manners of apps if you swing by the office.
Oh- and I don't have a name for my black Macbook either. Is that normal?
BTW... I settled for "Triton" in the end...
