Missy Higgins @ The Commodore

Yes, Summer is well and truly on the way here in Vancouver which means many things including that the concert season has begun and I couldn't be happier about that development. Over the coming weeks and months of Spring and Summer, I'm due to catch performances by none other than The Kooks, O.A.R., Dave Matthews Band, John Butler Trio and no doubt a few others that are yet to announce dates.

Tonight it was the turn of stunningly talented Aussie songstress Missy Higgins. She was here in Vancouver not that long ago actually, but at a smaller venue up the road. This time, however, she performed at my favourite concert venue in town - The Commodore.

Tess, my former flatmate over here, and I were actually treated to three acts over the course of the evening with Missy being ably supported by Americans Mason Jennings and Brett Dennen. I have to be totally honest with you and admit my disappointment in Mason Jennings. Lyrically he's really talented and has released a great little studio album in "Boneclouds", but the fella had ZERO stage presence, tonight at least...

Brett Dennen, on the other hand, was unknown to me prior to tonight, but he can certainly notch me up as a new fan following his spirited set this evening.

Getting back to the star of the night in Missy, however, she was at her usual chatty best with the crowd relaying a tonne of stories about where her songwriting inspirations came from. Her banter, and of course her tunes were well received even by the those in the crowd who were primarily fans of either Mason Jennings or Brett Dennen, with the only blip being a small group of moronic, drunk, ignorantly vocal Kiwis in the crowd who I think were too inebriated to even know what was going on around them. Some things never change...

Check out a short piece of video from Missy's first song of the night below and if you get the chance to catch her on her US Summer tour, DO IT!
