It’s showtime! While the PNE is but days away from kicking off in Vancouver for 2011, here in Brisbane country folk have already hit town with the 135th Royal Queensland Show commencing last week.

Affectionately known as the “Ekka” (shortened form of the original name “Brisbane Exhibition”), the agricultural show is Queensland’s largest and most popular event with over 600,000+ people making their way down to the RNA Showgrounds in Bowen Hills over 10 days to get amongst the fun which includes agricultural displays, woodchopping competitions, animal parades, equestrian events and the ever-popular “sideshow alley” bursting at the seams with rides for all ages.

While I don’t think I’ll make the trip inside the gates this year, I did pop down onto Bowen Bridge Road after work this evening, from where you can get a pretty good view of sideshow alley and catch a glimpse of the nightly fireworks display. Here’s just a few of the images I captured:

The 2011 Ekka runs for another 4 days, finishing on Saturday night, and includes the always popular “People’s Day”, a Queensland Public Holiday, this coming Wednesday.

Predictably I guess, Mother Nature, who seems to be increasingly angry with the world these days, delivered a steady downpour of rain last night as I set out into the streets of Vancouver’s Yaletown district to check out and attempt to photograph the annual “Illuminate” festival.

Coinciding with the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics 1 year anniversary celebrations, the colourful, vibrant event this year consisted of 18 locations featuring an array of light art installations and interactive displays on view for the past two nights.

With $500 worth of prizes up for grabs in an associated Flickr photography contest, I battled the less than desirable weather conditions to come up with the following shots of what I considered to be the best of the displays. I’m undecided at this point as to whether or not I’m going to enter any of them into the contest, but I’ve got until March 6th to decide.

In what can only be described as a rare treat for Vancouver fans, popular Australian band “The Temper Trap” took the stage at Vancouver’s “The Commodore Ballroom” for the second time in 2010 last night, giving those fans who missed out back in June a second bite at the cherry, and boy did they not disappoint!

If it’s at all possible, front man Dougie and his band consisting of Jonathon, Toby & Lorenzo put on a far more polished performance than what I witnessed back in June. And if you read my glowing post from that concert, you’d be forgiven for wondering how it could get any better??

The defining factor for me last night was the crowd. Heavily littered with adoring Aussie fans, I think the mood of the place was probably best described by my compadre for the night, Katie, who screamed at one point, “Wow, this crowd is AMPED!” She wasn’t kidding, there was an energy in the place that really set the tone for a great performance and the boys seemed to feed off it.

The setlist didn’t seem to vary greatly from the show back in June (I’ll post it once I can find an accurately prepared and verified version), but that didn’t matter one iota. As Katie (@kat_trains) tweeted during the performance:

How amazing does it feel when the crowd knows EVERY word of EVERY song? Happening right now at The Commodore. #Vancouver CC: @TheTemperTrap

To give you a bit of a taste of the amazing night, here’s a video of the band’s extended performance of their hit “Sweet Disposition”, that was posted on YouTube by “The Georgia Straight” a popular Vancouver Street newspaper.

Following are a quick series of shots I snapped last night. Wasn’t the best of nights behind the camera for me (I was having FAR too much fun to be taking pics), but they should give you an idea of how it all played out nonetheless!

Every now and then I find some gems online that renew my excitement about the world of photography and the wealth of amazing possibilities the migration to digital provides. The full moon, 360 panorama of Cape Town, South Africa I found this morning is once such example.

Shot by professional panoramic photographer Lee Casalena, the stunning image was captured from the peak of Lion’s Head, one of the components, along with Table Mountain, that makes up Cape Town’s dramatic skyline.

Having spent a lot of time in Cape Town myself back in 2002, I know what the view is like from that very spot during the day, but I had no idea just how spectacular it would be at night under a full moon.

Explore the 360 panoramic image for yourself here: http://leecasalena.com/fullmoonhike.swf

It’s taken me a little longer to get around to posting this entry this year, but I’ve finally made my way through the few shots I took during Vancouver’s favourite annual Summer event the – “2010 Celebration of Light” international fireworks competition, and it’s time to share them with you all.

Having photographed this event from various locations around English Bay over the past few years (see here and here), I sat back, relaxed and enjoyed most of the performances this year (Team USA & Team Spain), and pulled out the ol’ Canon 7D for the Team Mexico performance.

It was a really fun night and the crew from down south didn’t disappoint! Here’s the best of what I managed to capture.

Headed into town to “The Commodore Ballroom” for the second time in a week to catch the must anticipated, first time in Vancouver, performance of Aussie sensations “The Temper Trap” tonight.

Joining thousands (I’m sure Whistler must be a ghost-town tonight) for the completely sold out gig, we were all treated to a textbook, non-stop delivery of nearly every track off their fantastic debut album “Conditions” including “Rest”, “Fader”, “Down River”, “Soldier On” and their international hit “Sweet Disposition”.

Update: An old friend of mine, Katherine, just sent me the set list from the night (below) which she has also written a blog post on here.

Intro

Rest

Fader

Fools

Down River

Love Lost

Soldier On

Sweet Disposition

Resurrection

Drum Song

Rabbit Song

Science of Fear

The highlight for just about everyone in the room, was definitely their final song of the regular set as they combined the haunting track “Resurrection” with the raw, rhythmic power of “Drum Song” which turned into a good old jam session with lead man Dougy Mandagi joining in with his own water covered floor tom at the front of stage. Awesome!

With the boys leaving the stage after the last song, the crowd made it more than blatantly obvious that they wanted more, stomping on the wooden ballroom floor with purpose in a way that I’ve not experienced at The Commodore before. Apparently, there were glasses falling off tables, so that should give you an idea of how much the place was rocking! It was like the spirit of “Drum Song” leaped off the stage and manifested itself in the crowd… ok, that’s deep, even by my standards! Haha!

A well received encore performance which featured a new single, “Rabbit Song”, was the perfect way to end the night and I, along with my friends in attendance (Chris, Andrea, Hazel & Andrew) all went home with ringing ears and big smiles – the result of a really enjoyable night out.

Here’s a few pics from the night…

Playing to a packed and sold out house, John Nicky & Byron performed an outstanding set (will post the full set list if and when I get my hands on it) consisting of a well received blend of songs from their new album “April Uprising” mixed in with a bunch of their all-time favourite tunes like “Used to Get High”, “Better Than”, “Something’s Gotta Give”, “Zebra” and more.

Highlights for me were definitely John’s now famous solo 12-string performance of the powerful and beautiful “Ocean” and a great little Banghra-style breakdown the boys pulled out during a rendition of “Treat Yo Mama”.

As I always like to do when I’m entertained long before the headlining act hits the stage, I have to give credit to tonight’s openers from Boston, Massachusetts – a solid trio called “State Radio”. Some people may be familiar with the reggae influenced single “Right Me Up” from their 2006 offering “Us Against The Crown”. I can say without hesitation that they are definitely worth checking out.

State Radio clearly have a healthy following, as I found myself surrounded in the opening set by a dozen fans who have been following the band around the US north-west having watched the boys perform in both Portland and Seattle a few nights previous. Pretty excited about being in Vancouver too, they were.

So yup, I definitely had a great night out filled with fantastic tunes that kept the sizable crowd jumping until the final encore number. I’m SERIOUSLY looking forward to “The Temper Trap” on Tuesday! I’ll be out with a good crew of people I convinced to come along with me, so I’ll be back to tell you all about that one later in the week!

Holy cow was that ever impressive! Just got home from a really cool night out at Vancouver’s “The Commodore” where I took in two really talented acts in Irish rockabilly songstress, Imelda May, and the incomparable, energetic pop-jazz sensation, Jamie Cullum.

With my mate Tia along for the ride, we arrived on Granville Street just before 9pm and picked up our tickets (courtesy of Scotiabank’s “Scene Card”) from The Commodore box office. We then proceeded upstairs and to our seats in a private booth, right of house, merely minutes before Imelda hit the stage with her 4-piece band.

Having never heard of the delectable Imelda, I really had no idea what to expect, but Tia and I were both suitably impressed with her deep, raspy, soulful voice which was spot on for the 1950′s-style rockabilly sound she was championing. The crowd at floor level seemed more than familiar with her work and were fired up from the opening number, so all in all she proved to be the perfect “warm-up” for the main act – Jamie Cullum.

I mentioned a few days ago that I first got a glimpse of Jamie Cullum at the 2006 Ottawa Jazz Festival. I was blown away by his energy and musical abilities then, so it was a real privilege for me to witness him again in the flesh here in Vancouver tonight.

I’ll post his diverse and near perfect set list as soon as I can get my hands on it, but in the meantime let me just say that he covered the best tracks off of his most recent release “The Pursuit” like “I’m All Over It”, “Wheels” and “Mixtape”, some old favourites, and stripped down, jazzed up covers of Rhianna’s “Don’t Stop the Music”, Jamie Foxx’s “Gold Digger” and the most impressive of all, Justin Timberlake’s “Cry Me A River”.

UPDATE: Ok, I have the set list now (courtesy of a fan over on jamiecullum.com):

I’m All Over It

Don’t Stop The Music

One Of Those Things

Get Your Way

Not While I’m Around

Frontin’ (Solo)

Photograph

Wheels (with Katy Hill on BVs)

These Are The Days

I Get A Kick (JC & Chris)

London Skies (Solo)

Mix Tape

What A Difference A Day Makes

If I Ruled The World

Mind Trick

Cry Me A River (In The Audience)

All At Sea

Wind Cries Mary

High & Dry (Solo)

The following is some video from his performance of the track “Photograph”, for your viewing pleasure.

I’m a sucker for good harmonies, so when Jamie got the surprisingly tone skillful crowd involved on the song “London Skies”, I was more than happy to join in, and was elevated to “goosebump” level with the collaborative result:

A true showman, filled with energy and constantly delivering witty and entertaining between-song-banter, Jamie Cullum is definitely one of the most entertaining acts I have, and probably will, see this year and I can’t recommend him enough to people out there looking for someone new to sink their teeth into (figuratively speaking of course).

And now to the pics…

I gotta tell you, considering we weren’t able to get that close to the stage, I’m more than happy with the quality of shot that my little Canon G11 was able to capture!
